Track and understand your menstrual cycle

Most of the people I know who track their menstrual cycle with an app, use Clue. Its design is approachable, has great resources to better understand your body and it’s possible to share the data with your partner. They seem to be taking privacy and research really serious. Clue is based in Berlin.

Clue is a menstrual tracking app, an encyclopedia, a resource for your health, and more.

Playground Guide Berlin

We love Berlins Playgrounds!

Thats why we created this online guide. Jari (my daughter) and I have been exploring and photographing amazing places in this city for years. And finally we managed to put them online. Berlin is such an amazing place for children with adventures around every corner. But the best playgrounds are often hidden – Dragons, Pirate ships, water slides, carousels, huge climbing meshes and giant climbing domes, artificial rocky mountains and so much more. It’s much more fun than any Disneyland could be!

Messaging app — state-of-the-art security, non-profit and open-source

Messaging app — state-of-the-art security, non-profit and open-source

Signal

Finally deleted Whatsapp, Facebook and Telegram. Now only using iMessage and Signal.

Signal is an easy-to-use app with state-of-the-art security that lets you privately talk, text, and share videos with your contacts.

Signal uses Curve25519, AES-256, and HMAC-SHA256. The security of these algorithms has been tested over many years of use in hundreds of different applications. Signal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, which means that they can only be read or heard by your intended recipients. We make it easy for you to verify that you are communicating with the right people and that no man in the middle attack has occurred.

The Signal service does not have access to the contents of any messages or calls sent or received by Signal users. Additionally, the complete source code for the Signal clients and the Signal server is available on GitHub. This enables interested parties to examine the code and help us verify that everything is behaving as expected. It also allows advanced users to compile their own copies of the applications and compare them with the versions we distribute.

The Signal Protocol is the most advanced cryptographic ratchet available. It ensures that new AES keys are used for every single message, and it provides Signal with both forward secrecy and future secrecy properties. The Signal Protocol also features enhanced deniability properties that improve on those provided by OTR, except unlike OTR all of these features work well in an asynchronous mobile environment.

Initiative for more transparency in Berlin

Initiative for more transparency in Berlin

Volksentscheid Transparenz Berlin

Fix My Berlin

Dumplings made from excess ingredients and therefore fresh recipes every week

Dings Dums

Art, technology and design workshops run by a lovely Berlin community

School of Machines

The School of Machines, Making & Make Believe provides one-of-a-kind hands-on learning experiences in the areas of art, technology, design, and human connection. Our philosophy is centered around the idea that we are all lifelong learners. We would love for our students to leave our programs activated; not only equipped with technical and hands-on tools and skill sets, but also critically-minded, more deeply engaged with their surroundings and with themselves.

Artists, designers, technologists, makers, researchers and the like come to us to explore new topics, develop and expand their practice, and wrestle out the courage to begin something new. We support them in these endeavors while encouraging curiosity, confidence, and the enthusiasm to say something with their work.

Our instructors are distinguished artists and technologists working directly with the tools they teach and our programs provide an opportunity for our students to work with them to expand their fields of knowledge and build towards a more interdisciplinary practice. Program sizes are small and students actively engage their new-found skills and collaborators each step of the way, creating individual and group work towards a public exhibition at programs end.

We encourage people without previous experience to apply, as we believe the formative qualities that make each of us distinctive humans-- our beliefs, attitudes and unique experiences-- can guide us towards the creation of something more magical than what technology alone can achieve. We must all start somewhere!

Liquid Democracy

Our vision is a democratic culture in which active participation is a given for everyone. Democratic decision-making needs to be more flexible, dynamic and transparent. Our mission as a non-profit organization is to promote the advantages of civic engagement through online participation. Liquid Democracy is an innovator in the field of participatory democracy. We believe participation is key to individual empowerment and active citizenship. Our work is based on the belief that democracy in its current form would benefit from increased flexibility and greater opportunities for direct engagement in the political process. In short, that the barriers to direct democracy become »liquefied.«

We are a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Berlin. We like to describe ourselves as a ‘Think & Do Tank’. Since our founding in 2009, we have worked on developing innovative techniques and methods to promote citizen participation. The core of our work revolves around the development of Adhocracy, a free and open-source software and digital participation tool providing users with various civic participation tools.
We employ digital technologies to integrate individuals in the decision-making process. Recognizing that technology use differs throughout the world, our software tools are designed to be as efficient, open and accessible as possible to ensure they can be used by a variety of users at any given time.

Have I Been Pwned?

I created HIBP as a free resource for anyone to quickly assess if they may have been put at risk due to an online account of theirs having been compromised or "pwned" in a data breach. I wanted to keep it dead simple to use and entirely free so that it could be of maximum benefit to the community.

Link list for Digitalization in Germany

Link list for Digitalization in Germany

Germany's digitalization scene

Great list of organizations and initiatives pushing digitalization in Germany by Victoria Boeck.

In the last couple years that I've been living in Berlin, I've become increasingly interested in the topics of digitization -- particularly of government and public services -- and civic tech. In the interest of easing the path for any others who are interested in following these developments within Germany, here is a list of starting points, loosely organized by areas of interest and types of resources. It is of course not exhaustive (I'm open to any suggestions for additions!), but I hope it might be helpful for other people trying to get an initial lay of the landscape in Germany.

Berlin store selling food without packaging

Original Unverpackt

re:publica

re:publica Berlin is Europe’s largest internet and digital society conference. More than 19 500 participants from 80 countries came together to discuss current issues of digital society at the three-day festival re:publica 18. re:publica participants represent a cross-section of (digital) society, which include professionals from economics, politics, business, hacker culture, NGOs, media, and marketing, as well as bloggers, activists, artists, and social media experts. Roughly 50 percent of re:publica 18 speakers were women, ranking the event as one of the most inclusive of its kind.

Active visitor participation makes re:publica a unique event. Anyone can propose topics, ideas, or projects for the program, which creates a diverse set of subjects and exceptional networking opportunities.

Founded in 2007 by Tanja Haeusler, Andreas Gebhard, Markus Beckedahl, and Johnny Hauesler, re:publica GmbH’s shareholders, newthinking communications and Spreeblick Verlag, have been committed to issues of net politics, as well as digital culture and society, for over a decade.

re:publica’s broad range of topics has been drawing an increasing number of sponsors and partners each year. Since 2014, this has included close collaborations with Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, as well as the international media convention MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin.

re:publica also nurtures close and long-standing partnerships with institutions, ministries, NGOs, corporations, and other organizations. These include corporations like Daimler AG, IBM, Microsoft, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Telekom, Google, Deutsche Bahn AG, Telefonica, and Mozilla, as well as political foundations (the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation, Friedrich-Ebert Foundations, Heinrich-Böll Foundation, Friedrich-Naumann Foundation), media outlets (ARD, ZDF, RBB, WDR), and NGOs (WWF, World Data Lab.)

Lisa Charlotte Rost

Great entry point if you want to get into dataviz. Have a look at her blog posts in which she compares 9 dataviz tools or at her slides on Github.

Creating & writing about dataviz for @datawrapper. #visber & @datavisclub organizer. Fan of numbers, systems & overviews. I believe in maps, not the territory.

Cross-platform password manager

Cross-platform password manager

1Password

Best designed password manager I’ve tried. I am currently also using Apple’s iCloud Keychain for convenience. But with 1Password you can better manage passwords and also safely store other sensitive information Safari can’t save like passports, licenses and notes.

With 1Password you only ever need to memorize one password. All your other passwords and important information are protected by your Master Password, which only you know.

CityLAB

The CityLAB is an experimental laboratory for the city of the future. Here, representatives from government, civil society, academia and start-ups collaboratively develop new ideas for how to both ensure and enhance the livability of Berlin as a city. The CityLAB combines elements of a digital workshop, a co-working space and event space into a single location where participation and innovation are jointly pursued. We see digitalization as an opportunity to re-think existing processes, dismantle social barriers and create new forms of civic participation. The CityLAB is not a single, finalized concept. Rather, it's a dynamic experiment intended to be continuously developed and re-imagined.

Personal all-in-one database

Personal all-in-one database

Notion

Discovered Notion around the same time as Dropbox Paper. Notion is basically the more powerful option. It’s become my personal database for everything except to-dos. Unfortunately it’s too slow to use as my daily to-do app. The biggest advantage I see in Notion is its modularity and integration with other tools. There are building blocks for texts, lists, to-do-list, quotes, code, vide, calendar, tables, boards and many more. It feels like a smart blank digital piece of paper. It’s been impressive to follow how the team has been constantly shipping new features oevr the past few years.
