Playground Guide Berlin

We love Berlins Playgrounds!

Thats why we created this online guide. Jari (my daughter) and I have been exploring and photographing amazing places in this city for years. And finally we managed to put them online. Berlin is such an amazing place for children with adventures around every corner. But the best playgrounds are often hidden – Dragons, Pirate ships, water slides, carousels, huge climbing meshes and giant climbing domes, artificial rocky mountains and so much more. It’s much more fun than any Disneyland could be!

Global Climate Strike

This September, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels. Our house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone.

Community of international designers working in, for and with governments across the world

International Design in Government

In 2017, the Government Digital Service established the international design in government community. A community of international designers working in, for and with governments across the world.

The international design in government community has grown to over 1200 members from over 58 countries over the past two years. The community developed online via a mailing list, Slack and monthly calls.

In summer 2018, 220 community members from 26 countries came together in London to exchange ideas, create connections, and find opportunities for collaboration at the first International Design in Government Conference.

In 2019, there will be various international events organised by community members. Learn more about the 2019 events in this blog post.

Initiative for more transparency in Berlin

Initiative for more transparency in Berlin

Volksentscheid Transparenz Berlin

Making the lives of people with different incomes visible

Making the lives of people with different incomes visible

Dollar Street

Imagine the world as a street ordered by income. Everyone lives somewhere on the street. The poorest lives to the left and the richest to the right. Everybody else live somewhere in between. Welcome to visit all homes on Dollar Street!

Dollar Street was invented by Anna Rosling Rönnlund at Gapminder.  For 15 years she spent her workdays making global public data easier to understand and use. Over time her frustration grew: carefully selecting data to present it in colorful and moving charts made overall global trends and patterns easier to understand. But it did not make everyday life on different income levels understandable. Especially not in places far from home. “People in other cultures are often portrayed as scary or exotic.” Anna explains: “This has to change. We want to show how people really live. It seemed natural to use photos as data so people can see for themselves what life looks like on different income levels. Dollar Street lets you visit many, many homes all over the world. Without travelling.”

Mapping the bike friendliness and improvements in Berlin

Mapping the bike friendliness and improvements in Berlin

Fix My Berlin

Interdisciplinary research group at FH Potsdam situated between interface design, computer science and the humanities

Interdisciplinary research group at FH Potsdam situated between interface design, computer science and the humanities

Urban Complexity Lab

We are an interdisciplinary research group at Fachhochschule Potsdam situated between interface design, computer science, and the humanities. Our work revolves around information visualization with a particular focus on the challenges and questions arising from social, cultural, and technological transformations. Our mission is to make sense of comprehensive datasets and complex issues by developing creative and critical approaches to visualization. All our research projects are collaborative in nature. We are working with academic and cultural institutions as well as public and private organizations, especially in the contexts of digital humanities, smart cities, and science communication. The lab is a collaboration between the Department of Design and the Institute for Urban Futures. At the junction of design teaching and visualization research, we strive to have an impact in both academia and the world of practice. For the physical and social space of the lab, our ambition is to cultivate a stimulating environment for a transdisciplinary community of designers, developers, and scholars engaging with contemporary issues of societal relevance. We are keen to share our work with the broader public via interactive prototypes, exhibitions and workshops, and with our academic peers through conferences and journals. The research lab is jointly directed by Marian Dörk, research professor for information visualization, and Boris Müller, professor for interaction design. Located in the main building on the FHP campus in Potsdam, the lab is a place where researchers and students with varying backgrounds especially interface design, informatics, and cultural studies are working together. We frequently invite practitioners and researchers to our public lecture series information+visualization to speak about current topics in data visualization.

NY Public Policy Lab

We're a non-profit that works at the intersection of human-centered design and public policy. We partner with government to design great public services with low-income and at-risk communities. We conduct in-person research in workplaces, homes, and communities so we can understand first-hand people's lives and needs. We prototype and test improved policies and services with community members, policymakers, and front-line staff. We help run and evaluate low-cost pilots so that new services and policies can be scaled up with confidence.

Dings Dums

Art, technology and design workshops run by a lovely Berlin community

Art, technology and design workshops run by a lovely Berlin community

School of Machines

The School of Machines, Making & Make Believe provides one-of-a-kind hands-on learning experiences in the areas of art, technology, design, and human connection. Our philosophy is centered around the idea that we are all lifelong learners. We would love for our students to leave our programs activated; not only equipped with technical and hands-on tools and skill sets, but also critically-minded, more deeply engaged with their surroundings and with themselves.

Artists, designers, technologists, makers, researchers and the like come to us to explore new topics, develop and expand their practice, and wrestle out the courage to begin something new. We support them in these endeavors while encouraging curiosity, confidence, and the enthusiasm to say something with their work.

Our instructors are distinguished artists and technologists working directly with the tools they teach and our programs provide an opportunity for our students to work with them to expand their fields of knowledge and build towards a more interdisciplinary practice. Program sizes are small and students actively engage their new-found skills and collaborators each step of the way, creating individual and group work towards a public exhibition at programs end.

We encourage people without previous experience to apply, as we believe the formative qualities that make each of us distinctive humans-- our beliefs, attitudes and unique experiences-- can guide us towards the creation of something more magical than what technology alone can achieve. We must all start somewhere!

Liquid Democracy

Our vision is a democratic culture in which active participation is a given for everyone. Democratic decision-making needs to be more flexible, dynamic and transparent. Our mission as a non-profit organization is to promote the advantages of civic engagement through online participation. Liquid Democracy is an innovator in the field of participatory democracy. We believe participation is key to individual empowerment and active citizenship. Our work is based on the belief that democracy in its current form would benefit from increased flexibility and greater opportunities for direct engagement in the political process. In short, that the barriers to direct democracy become »liquefied.«

We are a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in Berlin. We like to describe ourselves as a ‘Think & Do Tank’. Since our founding in 2009, we have worked on developing innovative techniques and methods to promote citizen participation. The core of our work revolves around the development of Adhocracy, a free and open-source software and digital participation tool providing users with various civic participation tools.
We employ digital technologies to integrate individuals in the decision-making process. Recognizing that technology use differs throughout the world, our software tools are designed to be as efficient, open and accessible as possible to ensure they can be used by a variety of users at any given time.

Link list for Digitalization in Germany

Link list for Digitalization in Germany

Germany's digitalization scene

Great list of organizations and initiatives pushing digitalization in Germany by Victoria Boeck.

In the last couple years that I've been living in Berlin, I've become increasingly interested in the topics of digitization -- particularly of government and public services -- and civic tech. In the interest of easing the path for any others who are interested in following these developments within Germany, here is a list of starting points, loosely organized by areas of interest and types of resources. It is of course not exhaustive (I'm open to any suggestions for additions!), but I hope it might be helpful for other people trying to get an initial lay of the landscape in Germany.

Original Unverpackt

CityLAB

The CityLAB is an experimental laboratory for the city of the future. Here, representatives from government, civil society, academia and start-ups collaboratively develop new ideas for how to both ensure and enhance the livability of Berlin as a city. The CityLAB combines elements of a digital workshop, a co-working space and event space into a single location where participation and innovation are jointly pursued. We see digitalization as an opportunity to re-think existing processes, dismantle social barriers and create new forms of civic participation. The CityLAB is not a single, finalized concept. Rather, it's a dynamic experiment intended to be continuously developed and re-imagined.
