Messaging app — state-of-the-art security, non-profit and open-source

Finally deleted Whatsapp, Facebook and Telegram. Now only using iMessage and Signal.

Signal is an easy-to-use app with state-of-the-art security that lets you privately talk, text, and share videos with your contacts.

Signal uses Curve25519, AES-256, and HMAC-SHA256. The security of these algorithms has been tested over many years of use in hundreds of different applications. Signal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, which means that they can only be read or heard by your intended recipients. We make it easy for you to verify that you are communicating with the right people and that no man in the middle attack has occurred.

The Signal service does not have access to the contents of any messages or calls sent or received by Signal users. Additionally, the complete source code for the Signal clients and the Signal server is available on GitHub. This enables interested parties to examine the code and help us verify that everything is behaving as expected. It also allows advanced users to compile their own copies of the applications and compare them with the versions we distribute.

The Signal Protocol is the most advanced cryptographic ratchet available. It ensures that new AES keys are used for every single message, and it provides Signal with both forward secrecy and future secrecy properties. The Signal Protocol also features enhanced deniability properties that improve on those provided by OTR, except unlike OTR all of these features work well in an asynchronous mobile environment.

1Password

1Password

Cross-platform password manager

Cross-platform password manager

Best designed password manager I’ve tried. I am currently also using Apple’s iCloud Keychain for convenience. But with 1Password you can better manage passwords and also safely store other sensitive information Safari can’t save like passports, licenses and notes.

With 1Password you only ever need to memorize one password. All your other passwords and important information are protected by your Master Password, which only you know.

My default Wikipedia-app

I usually use V for Wiki when I have no idea what building I am looking at. The nearby map view shows Wikipedia posts around you and therefore super useful when traveling.

Notion

Notion

Personal all-in-one database

Personal all-in-one database

Discovered Notion around the same time as Dropbox Paper. Notion is basically the more powerful option. It’s become my personal database for everything except to-dos. Unfortunately it’s too slow to use as my daily to-do app. The biggest advantage I see in Notion is its modularity and integration with other tools. There are building blocks for texts, lists, to-do-list, quotes, code, vide, calendar, tables, boards and many more. It feels like a smart blank digital piece of paper. It’s been impressive to follow how the team has been constantly shipping new features oevr the past few years.

The all-in-one workspace - for notes, tasks, wikis, and databases.
