Messaging app — state-of-the-art security, non-profit and open-source

Finally deleted Whatsapp, Facebook and Telegram. Now only using iMessage and Signal.

Signal is an easy-to-use app with state-of-the-art security that lets you privately talk, text, and share videos with your contacts.

Signal uses Curve25519, AES-256, and HMAC-SHA256. The security of these algorithms has been tested over many years of use in hundreds of different applications. Signal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, which means that they can only be read or heard by your intended recipients. We make it easy for you to verify that you are communicating with the right people and that no man in the middle attack has occurred.

The Signal service does not have access to the contents of any messages or calls sent or received by Signal users. Additionally, the complete source code for the Signal clients and the Signal server is available on GitHub. This enables interested parties to examine the code and help us verify that everything is behaving as expected. It also allows advanced users to compile their own copies of the applications and compare them with the versions we distribute.

The Signal Protocol is the most advanced cryptographic ratchet available. It ensures that new AES keys are used for every single message, and it provides Signal with both forward secrecy and future secrecy properties. The Signal Protocol also features enhanced deniability properties that improve on those provided by OTR, except unlike OTR all of these features work well in an asynchronous mobile environment.

1Password

1Password

Cross-platform password manager

Cross-platform password manager

Best designed password manager I’ve tried. I am currently also using Apple’s iCloud Keychain for convenience. But with 1Password you can better manage passwords and also safely store other sensitive information Safari can’t save like passports, licenses and notes.

With 1Password you only ever need to memorize one password. All your other passwords and important information are protected by your Master Password, which only you know.

Prototyping master tool

Prototyping master tool

The biggest advantage are the hundreds of plugins for Sketch. Whatever need you have, there is a plugin for you. Make sure to instal Sketch Runner as it makes it really easy to install plugins + many more little usefull features.

Sketch is the definitive tool for digital design. It’s used primarily by screen designers who create websites, icons, and user interfaces for desktop and mobile devices. For beginners and industry professionals alike, Sketch’s powerful tools, gentle learning curve and intuitive UI allow designers to focus on what they do best; design.

Paste

Paste

Clipboard manager

Clipboard manager

I was previously using Jumpcut — a free and super simple clipboard manager. Paste won me over with 3 core featrues: 1. Organizing snippets you use frequently in Pinboards 2. Visual clipboard history and preview any type of content 3. iCloud sync. There is also an iOS app as well but I've never really used it.

Paste automatically stores everything you copy across all your devices and keeps your clipboard history organized.

Notion

Notion

Personal all-in-one database

Personal all-in-one database

Discovered Notion around the same time as Dropbox Paper. Notion is basically the more powerful option. It’s become my personal database for everything except to-dos. Unfortunately it’s too slow to use as my daily to-do app. The biggest advantage I see in Notion is its modularity and integration with other tools. There are building blocks for texts, lists, to-do-list, quotes, code, vide, calendar, tables, boards and many more. It feels like a smart blank digital piece of paper. It’s been impressive to follow how the team has been constantly shipping new features oevr the past few years.

The all-in-one workspace - for notes, tasks, wikis, and databases.

Carbon Copy Cloner

Carbon Copy Cloner

Cloning hard drives

Cloning hard drives

I use it to make an exact backup of my external hard drives. CCC has been a true timesaver over the years. No more manually copying, comparing folders and duplicate files.

The simplest method to migrate to a new, larger hard drive, especially if you have lost your original Mac OS X Installation DVD. Support for block-level clones for super-fast upgrades. Fast, incremental backups copy only the items that have changed since the last backup. Archive past versions of your files and items that have been deleted. Back up to hard drives or to disk images. Schedule backup tasks on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Configure a backup task to run when the backup device is (re)attached to your Mac.
