Commercial Type

Based in New York and London, Commercial Type is a joint venture between Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz, who have collaborated since 2004 on various typeface projects, most notably the award winning Guardian Egyptian. The company publishes retail fonts developed by Barnes and Schwartz, their staff, and outside collaborators, and also represents the two and their team when they work together on type design projects.

My go-to typeface when it's about openness or requires a humanistic touch.

Fira Sans is a humanistsans-seriftypeface designed by Erik Spiekermann, Ralph du Carrois, Anja Meiners and Botio Nikoltchev of Carrois Type Design for the Firefox OS. Fira was released in 2013 initially under the Apache License and later reissued under the SIL Open Font License. It is closely related to the Meta typeface designed and developed by Spiekermann in the late 1980s which is used as the brand typeface of the  Mozilla Foundation.

When we set out to create a typeface that was unmistakably IBM, our own history was our greatest source of inspiration. IBM has always served as a medium between mankind and machine. Between the natural and the engineered. The emotional and rational. The classic and the cutting-edge. Our most important job is to help humanity and technology move forward together. IBM Plex™ brings these relationships to life through letterforms. We needed Plex to be a distinctive, yet timeless workhorse—an alternative to Helvetica Neue for this new era. The Grotesque style was the perfect fit. Not only do these typefaces balance human and rational elements, the Grotesque style also came about during the Industrial Age (when IBM was born).

My new favorite typeface.

Inter is a typeface carefully crafted & designed for computer screens. Inter features a tall x-height to aid in readability of mixed-case and lower-case text. Several OpenType features are provided as well, like contextual alternates that adjusts punctuation depending on the shape of surrounding glyphs, slashed zero for when you need to disambiguate "0" from "o", tabular numbers, etc.

Klim

The Klim Type Foundry (Klim) was founded in 2005 by type designer Kris Sowersby. Klim sells its typefaces directly through klim.co.nz and is based in Wellington, New Zealand.

Since releasing his first retail typeface, Feijoa, in 2007, Kris has received numerous awards and accolades, including: a Certificate of Excellence from the New York Type Directors Club for his second typeface, National, in 2007; being named an ADC Young Gun in 2010; being accepted as a member of the prestigious Alliance Graphique Internationale (the second New Zealander to do so) in 2013; and receiving the John Britten Black Pin in 2015, the highest award given by the Designers Institute of New Zealand. Kris has designed custom fonts for such clients as The Financial Times, PayPal and National Geographic.

Kris studied at Whanganui School of Design and worked briefly as a graphic designer before starting Klim. His typefaces combine historical knowledge with rigorous contemporary workmanship, and are used internationally in analogue and digital media.

Noe Blanco is a typeface designer and font engineer based in Barcelona. She enjoys drawing and producing fonts with a special focus on the process where drawing and design meet technology. After graduating at BAU with a BA in Graphic Design and an MA in Advanced Typography at Eina (Barcelona), Noe went on to complete an MA in Type and Media at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague. Noe has worked for Underware and since 2013 has collaborated independently with numerous foundries such as Tobias Frere-Jones, Blackletra, Suitcase and FosterType. Currently she works at Klim Type Foundry and occasionally collaborates with other independent foundries.

Lineto - the name is borrowed from the PostScript™ page description language - was founded in 1993 by Cornel Windlin and Stephan Müller as a label for their individual type design activities. Five years later, they jointly set up Lineto.com to distribute their own typefaces on the web, and invited a number of fellow designers with shared sensibilities to publish their fonts alongside. Since then, Lineto has developed into a reputable, slowly growing library of original typefaces. In 2007, Jürg Lehni joined forces as a third associate.  Licenses for Lineto fonts are available exlusively from this website only, except for some of the early work shown in the «Lineto Legacy» section. These continue to be sold through the FontFont label.

A custom font conveys a company’s heritage and values. It is a priceless investment lasting the brand’s lifetime. The web application Prototypo gives the ability to create custom fonts and export them to use everywhere (desktop applications, websites…). After choosing one of the four templates available (designed by the international foundry Production Type) users can design their own font by moving over 30 sliders (x-height, curves of the serifs, width…). The changes apply live to each character of the Latin alphabet. Thanks to its “Glyphs individualization” and “Manual editing” features, the app gives users a high degree of customisation. Prototypo allows them to create a fully functional font without using any other software. Based on the parametric fonts technology that uses algorithms to generate letters, Prototypo automates the repetitive tasks specific to type design.

Replica

Fuxblau uses the Replica typeface. I love how at first sight it looks like the corners are smooth but once you look closer you notice the geometric corners.

Replica is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Dimitri Bruni and Manuel Krebs. It was released through Swiss foundry Lineto in 2008. The design was built around a strict grid that gives it a geometric feel, yet it still retains a classic grotesque appearance. Replica is available in four weights with matching italics.

Typewolf

I launched Typewolf as a side project in June of 2013. Working as a designer, I was always frustrated by the lack of good resources for choosing fonts for design projects. Seeing type samples set in “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” isn’t very useful when it comes to web design—seeing how real type performs on actual websites is much more helpful. I’ve also noticed that other typography sites tend to be written from a type designer’s perspective rather than from the perspective of someone who actually uses type in their day-to-day work. I’ve been a designer for 17 years, so everything on Typewolf is approached from a designer’s perspective. My goal is to make Typewolf the absolute best resource available for everything related to typography on the web. Typewolf will always remain an independent site that features typefaces from all type foundries regardless of where the fonts can be purchased.
